WHY SHOULD WE STUDY LACS?

Fear not for the future, weep not for the past

– Percy Bysshe Shelly

I am a high school student of not only of Latin American decent, but as well as Caribbean decent, coming from a Trinidadian father and a Costa Rican mother. And it’s not only me who comes from this background in my high school, more than 28% of the student body comes from a similar background, and America has slowly and slowly been more populated by citizens of Latin American and Caribbean decent. Yet, in school systems across the country a majority of history and Social studies teachers have taught from a bias White stand point despite the majority of Students being from Latin American decent. This causes students of Latin American and Caribbean decent to feel a sense of discomfort and tends to make them care less about the course, because they have nothing to relate to in the course. Actually 10% of all Latin American students in America dropout of high school https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/09/29/hispanic-dropout-rate-hits-new-low-college-enrollment-at-new-high/. Students have also been studied to show that they have a harder time becoming engaged in school because they found no common ground in the curriculum ( Ross D. Franklin The Ongoing Battle Over Ethnic Studies )

However, LACS has proven to almost completely stop that issue all together, which is why I think all schools should have a LACS program.
